Last month, in just 31 days, there were 180,034 apprehensions at the U.S.-Mexico border, and that’s compared to 23,237 apprehensions in May 2020, according to data from the U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

“I am unaware of a governor ever declaring a disaster at county requests because of the tidal wave of illegal immigrants coming across the border, wrecking havoc in communities and residents who live here in Texas,” said Governor Abbott.
Critics believe that Governor Abbott should not hold the power to make executive decisions on “Border Disasters” over decisions made by the Federal Government. They state as an example “under the previous administration the Wall cost taxpayers $46 million per mile”. However, “illegal immigration costs Texas taxpayers over $850 million each year”. The Texas Attorney General has even filed an official complaint against the Biden Administration.

State Representative Chris Turner stated “I think the governor should have emergency powers in certain circumstances because emergencies do arise,” But, he continued, “the fact that Trump is going to tour the border with him next week is proof that this is more about Republican primary politics than it is serious policy.”
“This is not a red or blue issue—this is a public safety issue,” said Renae Eze, a Spokesperson for Governor Abbott. She continued “President Biden’s reckless open border policies have led to a crisis along our southern border… Until the Biden Administration starts doing their job, Texas is stepping up to secure our southern border and protect Texans.”
Whether or not this is politically motivated shouldn’t matter, as much needed attention is finally being brought to our U.S. Border. So much in fact, that it may have sparked motivation in the Biden Administration to pay a visit. Views on illegal immigration is no longer a partisan issue, as much as it is a human rights issue. By allowing illegal immigration, America ends up with an unpredictable, and unregulated, amount of immigrants in despair. With a lack of resources, and a lack of housing, we are increasing the homeless population in our country. Children are being separated from their families. The disregard for undocumented human beings in our country needs to be stopped.
