Portland Police officers shot a man last night, after he attempted to stab them with a screwdriver, outside of Motel 6. Police were called to the scene with reports of a “suicidal man”. Upon arrival, the man agreed to be transported to a hospital for evaluation. While being patted down, the man became agitated and “came at the officers with a screwdriver”.
As the suspect attempted to flee, he was shot in the back by police. He later was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Shortly after the shooting, a crowd began to form around the officer involved shooting scene. Members of the crowd began to throw objects, smash patrol vehicle windows, and slash police tires. Some participants tried to enter the closed area. An officer’s baton was grabbed and another officer was sprayed with a “chemical”.
To avoid further destruction, Portland Police Bureau quickly released statements on Twitter, explaining “There is erroneous information being circulated on social media regarding in the officer involved shooting in the Lloyd district. We can confirm that the subject involved is an adult white male. No one else was injured.”
The Portland Police Bureau declared to far-left extremist groups, such as Antifa, that since the suspect was “white” it was not just-cause for a riot. Although the suspect was violent, he was shot and killed while running away from police, similar to every event that inspired previous protests and riots. However, in this case, it was the color of the suspects skin, that gave peace of mind to the city of Portland.
“Our officer encountered a very difficult and dynamic situation that no officer wants to face,” Chief Chuck Lovell said in a statement
Journalist and author, Andy Ngo highlighted the modern racism which is allowed from the far-left, in a tweet stating “Portland Police had to issue a tweet clarifying that the person shot today in NE Portland was white after antifa said it was a person of color. Antifa & far-left protesters have gathered at the scene to confront police based on the racial rumor.”
