American Martyr: Charlie Kirk

On September 10th, 2025, Charlie Kirk was politically assassinated while giving a speech at a college campus in Utah. Charlie Kirk is a political martyr who died in support of the same freedoms that our Founding Fathers’ died to establish. At the event, Charlie Kirk wore a white shirt that bore the sole words “Freedom.” This single word summarized Kirk’s political platform, the encouragement of free speech, free thought, and public civic discussion in student universities. Kirk’s passion for politics ushered in a resurgence of American conservativism. Now, Kirk’s death increases the propensity for political conflict, thereby worsening the divide in the partisanship amongst Americans. But citizens must remember that political differences does not equate to an advocation for the extermination of all opposition. Political discourse invigorates the mind and allows differences in worldview to be expressed in a safe environment free from physical violence, no matter the positions. Free speech is an inherent principle of citizenry that all Americans are endowed, no matter their views. Civic political debate is a historic tradition that has existed since the founding of the American nation. Charlie Kirk’s death is a shock to the political community, no matter the partisanship. No matter the polarity of any American’s political belief, no human being deserves to die. The danger of radical extremist is a fallacy, as violence is immensely unpopular. Logic outweighs physical violence under any circumstance. Although Charlie Kirk has been politically assassinated, his legacy lives on. Kirk’s Turning Point USA has helped bring political awareness to college campuses; offering students a political alternative to institutionalist groupthink. Conservativism explicitly refutes tyranny, thus conservative policy mitigates the encroachment thereof. Charlie Kirk’s advocation of liberty and free speech bears salience in contemporary polity, whereby political opposition resorts to assassinations to attempt to silence independent ideas.

Charlie Kirk is the political martyr of our generation, joining the tragic wake of modern political assassinations such as Martin Luther King, Jr., Robert F. Kennedy, Malcolm X, and John F. Kennedy. Like the others before him, Charlie Kirk deferred his authority to God. Under the circumstances of his untimely demise, Scripture offers the assurance of Jesus, “[t]ruly, truly, I say to you, if anyone keeps My word he will never see death.” (John 8:51, 1995, NASB).

Charlie Kirk ignited a movement that will remain throughout America’s political posterity. In 2019, Liberty University began its Turning Point USA chapter. Charlie Kirk “Turning Point USA has, I think, significantly moved hundreds of thousands, if not millions of people, hopefully to conservative beliefs, and we see that through direct digital outreach and campus advocacy,” Kirk said. “Our goal is to try to get people to think outside of a kind of leftist norm that’s out there and embrace these ideas in ways that they never heard before.” (Liberty.edu). Despite the tragic loss of Charlie Kirk, the remarkable impact he left on college educational institutions and its students remains.
